Why a Blog?
Since I already present myself to you. I would like to tell you why a started this blog and what I want to accomplish with it.
Why now?
As you already know, I’m currently enjoying some short on vacations in between semesters. I want to go back a little bit and I want to write about why I decided to start this blog.
As I mentioned in one of my earlier posts, I wrote an article for a journalism class blog. To write that blog post I had to do some research to back up what I wanted to write.
I loved the whole process and when I finish writing it, I sent it to some of my friends and professors which told me that they’d really liked it. That made me feel very happy and it felt right the feeling of placing my thought on paper, and I’ll explain to you why in writing and not in a video like most people do in a second.
At the time it never occurs to me to create my own blog that soon. I also didn’t have much experience nor stories to tell, I even forgot how much I like to write over the years. I remember how I felt when writing when a female professor asked the class who was a blogger. Nobody was and then she told me why didn’t I tell the story of what’s to be like being an international student in Toronto.
At first, I thought that the idea itself was crazy, but when something gets into my head I can’t forget about it unless I take a decision and/or finishing a particular task. I reviewed my options on an imaginary scale and it made way more sense to me to write a blog than not doing it. Having analyze the benefits of writing a blog, due to that I’ll be not just informing but improving my writing and communication skills.
Why a Blog and not a *Vlog in today’s world
A lot of people have been telling me why do I write if I could record myself. Maybe you’ve thought exactly the same. A friend of mine just started his vlog and I think it’s a great idea but the truth is that I don’t like being recorded. My generation was one of the first using cameras to record people doing or saying stuff and then make fun of them, so I feel weird when being recorded. I love to write so… Blog it is.
Another reason why I like blogging is that you can edit whenever you want when you find a mistake or new information or when you want to add and explanation.
If I read a grammatical error or any error after I post it, I could easily edit it without taking the post down and then uploaded it again. That’s not the case with Vlogs, sometimes they could lose a whole video if the mistake/error is unfixable. I also don’t feel comfortable telling stories when talking. That’s not the case with writing. With writing, I can feel free, I can edit as much as I want, I love to search for pictures to decorate my blog or to put my own pictures/ graphic pieces, and if I get tired I can stop, take my time and then continue writing.
*For those who don’t know what a Vlog is, it’s basically a video blog, like the ones on YouTube.
Reasons and motivations
Some of the reasons to start writing now is that even though I worked before, I’ve never worked in the same place for more than a month and it was always in a family-related environment, except when I worked as a dishwasher in a Thai restaurant last year, work that isn’t related with my area of study which is marketing. I realized that without experience to show it would be hard to stand out, that’s why when writing a blog I’m also creating my own work experience.
Having a place where you can share your own content it will be a very helpful tool for the future when I start will start my career in marketing/advertising, especially if I get a good amount of people to read my blog. It will become my own channel of communication. It also helps me a lot to have this blog, I have a lot of free time especially when I go back home or on vacations. If I don’t keep my mind busy I get bored and that makes me feel a bit empty. Having something to do it’s a great plus in my life.
End results
At the end of the day, we need to know that reading has many benefits for us such as mental stimulation, concentration and memory improvement, stress reduction and tranquillity.
It is a fact that in my home country most people are not very fond of reading, It doesn’t help that there is a tax called IVA in Spanish and VAT in English and it means Value-added tax. That tax is included in every good sold and services, this tax is included in the sales of books not the book itself. This make the book less affordable for people : It’s sad because Chile has two Nobel prizes of literature with Lucila Godoy (Gabriela Mistral) and Ricardo Neftalí Reyes (Pablo Neruda). My intentions of deciding to do this blog it is to incentive more people to read and with that, I can be an asset for the society. I know that a 5 minutes read won’t help you much improving your concentration nor your memory but I do want that in those 5 minutes that you are reading my post, you’ll be able to forget whichever problem or worry you have in your mind and just focus and enjoy whatever story I tell you that day. If I didn’t want to deliberate something good, something worth reading, I’d never started this blog. I do want people to read me and if I can help you or tell you something that you didn’t know or just make an enjoyable 5 minutes reading, my work would be worth something for me.
Last week a friend told me that he wasn’t a fan of reading but that he even saved some of my blog post to read later just for fun. That statement meant a lot to me. At first, this blog was to help me to get a future job, a simple portfolio to show. I’ve never thought people would want to read me and It never occurred to me that someone would do it for fun.
Every good and constructive feedback that I’ve got on those past months are the fuel that keeps me writing. So, thank you all for reading me so far 🙂
I’m working on something for next week that I think you’ll find very interesting, I hope you’ll enjoy the surprise.
I hope you’ve enjoyed today’s post, it’s a bit shorter than usual but it was a very fun one to do, write you next week and have a great weekend 🙂
Go, go, go! We will keep reading!
Thank you very much, I hope you’ve enjoyed my posts so far 🙂
“we even have a tax for book which makes it less affordable to people that do like reading”
That’s not true. It’s just misinformation.
I’m sorry if I didn’t explain myself clearly, I’ll fix it, thanks for commenting,
best regards
